YA'LL.
Karama Collection, some new friends of mine, are doing a Do The Thing Movement giveaway of their Addis Tote (shown in photo above) this week! You guys: THIS BAG IS LIFE (and the original price is $236!). I have traveled quite a bit this month and it's been so nice to have a big 'ole tote to carry my makeup, planner, laptop, etc. around. It really does fit just about everything! I couldn't be more excited to lock arms with them and be a part of their "Swirl of Good" to share about their mission! Karama Collective Misson: Karama's mission is to alleviate poverty by restoring dignity through creative, purposeful work for artisans, beginning in Africa. Their ultimate vision is to live in a world where poverty is overcome through dignified work, so families and communities can thrive. History: Karama began in 2006 with a single artisan partner in Ethiopia and has since expanded to working with artisans in 6 countries, affecting over 2,400 artisans and their families in this time period. Each purchase provides layers of transformation, yielding individual, community, economic and eternal impact. Young Life Africa/Haiti: Karama is dedicated to funding Young Life Africa and Haiti's campership program where thousands of teenagers experience the love of God and many begin a relationship with Jesus Christ, often in the same communities where Karama is invested in local businesses. As Karama grows and reaches a broader audience, sales increase, as does our ability to contribute to the outreach ministry of Young Life in Africa. Karama has done an incredible job producing a video to showcase their heart for the work they do. As creative entrepreneurs, we all have those times where we need to show our story through video. I asked them to give me the "behind-the-scenes" about the process they went through to shoot the video below:
1. Who produced the video for you? We produced the video in house! We are a nonprofit so we do a lot as a team and work hard for every marketing piece and campaign that goes out into the world. We are happy to share the stories of YL campers and artisans. We believe we have a privilege and responsibility to educate our consumers on ethical fashion, fair trade, and to ask the question where there products came from. The voiceover is done by our co-founder Dyan Larmey, on a Karama tour visiting our artisan groups.
2. Tell me about the process of choosing a videographer. What was important to you? Our videographer for the first video was a girl in our own tribe, part of the Swirl of Good, friend of Karama, etc. She's an amazingly talented local girl who knows how to tell a story! 3. What were you trying to accomplish through the video? More than anything, we want consumers to know their purchase matters. Love Looks like Karama was a campaign built to tell the stories of our artisans and connect everyone in our Swirl of Good, to show them where they fit in the picture of Karama. Our Swirl of Good which encompasses our artisans, customers, Young Life community, staff, and volunteers. Karama seeks to connect everyone in our Swirl as we share dignity and provide job opportunities for those in Africa and Haiti. We wanted to capture the communities where our artisans and live and work, as we tell their stories through creative work! 4. How long did the production process take? The tour was 2 weeks long and our videographer was with us for the entire duration of the trip. 5. What advice would you give someone looking to produce a similar video? Be honest and convey a clear message. Ask these questions to yourself: Why am I making this video? What story do I want to tell? What will the result of this video be? And like anything in a campaign... edit, edit, edit! Continue to improve and revise your work to see the best results.
Above is another video about the impact of Karama Collection to check out! I asked them about their vision for this video vs. the first one and this was their response:
"This video was made on a very low budget. You can obviously see the difference, but it's doable! The two videos served very different functions. the first was telling a story and showcasing the spirit of Karama whereas the second was showing the impact Karama has already made and will continue to make. The video is comprised of video, camera roll, and stills we had collected over the years with a voice over from a Swirl member, Young Life Africa friend and leader." I want to say a HUGE thank you to Karama for being willing to share on Do The Thing Movement. Here's the moment you've been waiting for... HOW DO I ENTER TO WIN THE ADDIS TOTE BAG? Prayer for the entrepreneur:
Jesus, you are mighty. You are greater and bigger and more loving than I could ever comprehend in life here on earth. May You always be the ultimate Hero of the content I create. May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in YOUR sight, Lord. In Your name, Amen
